- Reinforced Conference, Tanduay import Freeman Williams, after hitting only 11 points in his debut, came back in his second outing on October 6 against Hills Bros.Coffee, now mentored by their former coach Arturo Valenzona who was fired from the job when the Rhummakers got eliminated in the All-Filipino, Freeman Williams scored 82 points, fourth-best at that time, behind Michael Hackett's 103, Larry McNeil's 88 and Lew Massey's 85.
Season Summary
- Tanduay signed up David Thirdkill, a member of the 1986 NBA World Champions Boston Celtics, as their import for the First Conference, On the opening night on March 22nd against the powerhouse Great Taste coffeemakers, a team with a manpower build up during the off-season, Thirdkill scored 45 points and his marginal basket plus a foul with only four seconds left gave Tanduay the victory, 105–104 as they rallied from 16 points down, 86–102 with a little over six minutes left via a 19–2 run. Tanduay finished the first round of eliminations with a 5–1 card, winning over Ginebra in double-overtime, 129–124 in the first meeting of the season between these arch rivals, At the start of the second round of eliminations, Tanduay won by a point again over Great Taste, 121–120 on Willie Generalao's buzzer-beating shot, the Rhummakers, although assured of a semis berth with a 9–3 record, ended up playing in the quarters after losing to Magnolia, 98–108 for outright qualifier. Tanduay and Great Taste had identical 4–2 slate in the semis, and clash for the second time in the first conference championship, Tanduay won its third title with a 4–1 series victory. David Thirdkill scored 59 points in a title-clinching 134–120 win in Game five.
- The Rhummakers performed poorly in the next two conferences, which led to the dismissal of head coach Arturo Valenzona after the All-Filipino Conference, and replaced by assistant coach Ely Capacio, Tanduay could only show two wins in each conferences, eliminated and ended up last in the six-team field, it was a sad exit for one of the founding members of the PBA as the Elizalde franchise formally disbanded its team after the season, The Tanduay ballclub that won three championships from 1986–87, played its last game on November 3, a 127–145 loss to Ginebra.
